A Peep Into The Working of Diesel Engine Trucks

Even a desultory look into the history of mankind will reveal that all the inventions that have taken place were meant to cater to the unrelenting demands and expectations of people to make their lives easy. Manufacturing of goods with the help of these inventions alone will not help. These goods should reach the people who are in need of them. So, the transportation sector plays a major role in the movement of goods from the place of manufacture to the needy customers living in various places. To carry out this task of movement of these goods more efficiently, inventions and innovations started taking place in this sector also. One of the greatest inventions in this sector is the advent of the diesel engine. This invention has totally transformed and revolutionized the transportation sector and all the customers are deriving great benefits due to this invention.

Every one of us are aware of the scientific fact that "energy can neither be created nor destroyed". The same theory is used in the diesel engines in which the chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy. When the mechanical energy moves the pistons up and down in a truck, the crankshaft connected to the pistons rotates the wheels and so, the truck starts moving. You produce chemical energy when the diesel fuel is burned in the engine of the truck. This combustion of diesel happens only when this fuel gets into the cylinder. The compressed air inside the cylinder reaches a specific level to produce heat and this heat burns the injected diesel.

In general, the diesel engines used on trucks are four-stroke engines. Intake stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke and exhaust stroke are the four strokes involved in these engines. When the intake stroke takes place, air gets into the system and the piston is made to go down. In the compression stroke, the air that gets into the system gets compressed. The fuel is injected at the right time when the air reaches the specific compression point. When the fuel burns, chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy to move the piston up and down. When the crankshaft connected to the pistons is moved, the wheels start rotating to take the vehicle forward. Diesel is directly let into the cylinder where it is ignited with the heat of the compressed air. So, there is no necessity for a spark plug in diesel engines.

Therefore, the injector that lets in the fuel into the cylinder is considered the most complex part of a diesel truck. This injector must be placed in the right location because it should not be affected by the temperature and pressure generated inside the cylinder. But, it is the injector that lets in the fuel at the exact moment when the pressure produces the right amount of heat and is ready to ignite the fuel.

Diesel is heavier than gasoline. It evaporates slower than gasoline. It is less expensive also because its refining process is cheaper. Since its energy density is higher, it is used as the fuel for transporting goods by trucks. The trucks and the engines must be maintained in tip-top condition so as to get the maximum fuel efficiency. It is also found that undesirable emissions are much less in diesel fuel and so, the environment is also not polluted to the extent gasoline pollutes.
